Tea, Coffee and Bottled Water are provided. Please bring your own packed lunch to our full-day workshops unless stated that lunch is included.

Workshop sizes are limited to a maximum of six people in order to ensure personal attention. Unless otherwise stated, all workshops are for ages of sixteen upwards.

Students attending York School of Sewing workshops may only use the official school sewing machines provided. This is in accordance with our insurance requirements.


Lost Property Policy - (Please roll mouse over to open)

Lost Property Policy

York School of Sewing accepts no responsibility for private property whilst on the premises, including accepting any liability should lost property be returned for any reason to someone who is not its owner - eg if someone makes a false representation to York School of Sewing of ownership of property. 

Property that is left on the premises will be kept for a period of three months, after which it will be disposed of.

In order for property to be reclaimed, a detailed description of the item(s) and/or proof of ID (identity), and date that the item was left will be required.

While every effort will be made to identify the possible owner of lost property (which is likely to involve searching of the item) and then make contact with them, York School of Sewing will not return the property to that person unless they provide the details set out in the previous paragraph.

York School of Sewing will not mail/courier or insure during transit any reclaimed found property back to the presumed owner unless they send the appropriate fees to cover packing and postage, and any insurance during transit stipulated by the claimant.

Carry everything you need for a day out or your shopping home in this great reversibleTote Bag, with its roomy design and comfortable handles it is a pleasure to use.

In this workshop you will make your own Tote Bag, just bring along 1.5m of Main Fabric and 1.5m of Lining Fabric (3 metres in total), everything else is supplied; Sewing Machine, Equipment, Pattern (yours to keep) and Supporting Fabrics (interfacing and wadding) are provided along with Tea, Coffee and Bottled Water.

In this fab introduction to bag making you will learn how to use interfacing to provide support and stability to your fabric and use wadding to create comfortable handles. This is a great project for further developing your sewing skills.

PYJAMA BOTTOMSButterick Pyjama Pattern 3314

Machines, equipment and your pattern is provided. Bring along some fabric to make your Pyjama Bottoms (quantity to bring is explained below).

This is a fun, project based, workshop for those with basic machine sewing skills. You will make long or short (or anywhere in between) pyjama bottoms. This is a great project workshop for those wishing to develop their sewing skills.

Your pyjama bottoms will have an elasticated or drawstring waistband. You may also wish to embellish them with ribbon or braid, shape the hems or add some lace.

We will be using Butterick pattern number 3314 (provided by us and yours to keep). Please refer to the chart below to decide how much fabric you will need to bring with you - or buy some from the lovely range in our shop:

1. Decide which length of pyjama bottoms you wish to make - see image above for choices.
2. Choose the line that corresponds with the width of your chosen fabric (most cotton fabrics will be 115cm wide, 150 is the next most popular fabric width).
3. Then, read across the chart until you get to the column that is your size.

The amount of fabric in that box denotes the amount of fabric you will require.

For example, if I wanted to make a size Medium, 3/4 length pyjama bottoms and my fabric was 115cm wide then I would need 2 metres of fabric.

Machines, Equipment and your Pattern are provided. Bring along some fabric to make your Fab Shift Dress - or purchase some from the lovely range in our shop.

This is a fun, project based, workshop for those with basic machine sewing skills.

You will make a sleeveless shift dress - a must for any wardrobe. This is a great project workshop for those wishing to develop their sewing skills.

Your shift dress will have an Invisible Zip. You may also wish to add pockets or other features.

We will be using Kwik Sew Pattern number 3598. Please refer to the chart below to decide how much fabric you will need to bring with you.

1. Decide which length of shift dress you wish to make (on the left hand side of the chart)
2. Choose the line that corresponds with the width of your chosen fabric (most cotton fabrics will be 115cm wide)

This is a fun, project based, workshop for those with basic machine sewing skills. Your choice of Moda Jelly Roll is a sweet little bundle containing 40 strips of fabric measuring 2 ½ inches x 45 inches. They are a great way to achieve a co-ordinated look for your quilt top. 

This workshop is based on the famous Jelly Roll quilt race (no racing involved though!) 

You will make your quilt top under the expert guidance of master quilter, Fiona Hirst.

This is a project based workshop and is ideal for those who are learning to sew (you will have completed the beginners day 1 workshop or have a small amount of experience with a sewing machine).

We will make a Zipped Purse, experiment with Appliqué  and insert a Zip into your Fully-Lined Purse.

Once you have mastered these skills, it is easy to make these purses into a pyramid or boxed shape and can be used for many different purposes. Scale them up or down to suit.

All materials and equipment are provided along with an instruction booklet.

BEGINNERS' PATCHWORK AND QUILTING TECHNIQUES

Two-Day Workshop (Consecutive Days) - £80

All Sewing Machines and Equipment are Provided.  A Materials List will be sent to you upon booking.
 
This workshop will introduce you to the gentle art of Machine Patchwork and Quilting. Using your own fabric, you will make your finished 9 patch block into a gorgeous Cushion.
 
Starting at the very beginning, you will use your selection of fabrics (Fat Quarters) and then learn how to Rotary Cut, piece and assemble your Quilt Block. You will go on to learn other techniques such as Quilting, Log Cabin and ‘Quilt As You Go’.
 
At the end of the course you will go home with the Cushion you have made, Samples of the Techniques you have learned and an Instruction Booklet.

CUSHION WORKSHOP

 

One-Day Workshop - £65

Maximum of Six people on this workshop

On this one day workshop you will learn how to create professional-looking cushion covers such as an envelope cushion with fabric covered buttons and a piped cushion with zip fastening. Try out some additional techniques such as applique or textures to create a unique cushion.

All machines and equipment are provided. Bring along 1 metre of fabric and cushion pads of your choice. You will normally be able to get 2 or 3 cushions out of one metre of fabric depending on the size and style you choose.

STRAIGHT SKIRT WORKSHOP

One-Day Workshop - £80

Call it a straight skirt or a wiggle skirt, this on-trend, classic is a great addition to any wardrobe. This workshop will show you how to make a 1940s/50s inspired lined straight skirt. Choose from a selection of fabrics and linings and create a straight skirt to fit you. Techniques used will include darts, zip insertion, creating a lining and attaching a waistband.

All sewing machines, equipment and materials are provided but you are welcome to bring along your own fabric if you would prefer.

CRAZY PATCHWORK WORKSHOP

One-Day Workshop - £65

Maximum of Six people on this workshop

This one day workshop will introduce you to the art of Crazy Patchwork. This form of quilting came to prominence in the Victorian period but has its roots with American pioneers. It was a form of recycling precious fabric and keeping it as a working item. The genteel ladies in Victorian Britain took to this past time and embellished, as only Victorians could, with lots of ribbon, braid and embroidery. This workshop brings this technique up to date using modern and traditional fabrics. 

During the workshop you will make samples, experiment with the techniques and create patchwork that will be made into an heirloom Book Cover.

All machines, equipment and materials are included along with tea, coffee and bottled water. Just bring along a packed lunch.

You will go home with your samples, Book Cover and an instruction booklet.

Our one day workshop introduces you to fabulous crochet flowers. The flowers and leaves range from botanical to the world of fantasy. Crochet flowers make a super addition to lots of projects - the only limit is your imagination.

In this workshop, we will look at the different ways stitches can be formed to make curves, spikes or different textures.

We will also look at following stitch diagrams - not as scary as you might think. Most crochet patterns will have both diagrams and written word as instructions and it is useful to be able to understand both elements.

Before you know it, you will be crocheting all manner of fabulous items for you, your family and home.

SOCK KNITTING WORKSHOP

What could be cosier than pulling on a lovely pair of socks you have made yourself?

In this workshop you will be guided through, step by step, knitting your own socks.

You will learn how to;

  • Knit Top-Down Socks
  • Work in the Round using Double-Pointed Needles
  • Turn a Heel
  • Create a Wedge Toe
  • Use Kitchener Stitch to graft your stitches and finish your socks

Learn to knit socks in the round on double pointed needles. You will make a sample sock that includes details such as a rib cuff, turned heel, shaped toe and Kitchener stitch grafting.
Warning: Sock knitting can be addictive!

Your yarn is included, please bring along a set of 2.5mm double pointed needles. These are available to purchase on the day if required.

 

CURTAIN MAKING WORKSHOP

 

One-Day Workshop - £75

All machines, equipment and fabrics are provided

A maximum of four people attend this workshop, ensuring an even higher degree of individual attention.

Being able to make your own curtains not only saves money but ensures you can achieve exactly the look you want. On this one day workshop you will learn how to create professional-looking lined curtains.

During the workshop you will learn how to measure up and calculate fabric quantities including repeats and pattern placement. You will make samples of lined curtains with a pencil pleat heading. We will also discuss other types of curtain heading and how these are achieved.

Intermediate sewing skills - You will be used to using commercial patterns (not necessary for the Intemediate Sewing Techniques Day 1 workshop) and will be confident in the use of a sewing machine

DRESS FITTING SHELL

 

Three-Day Course - £275

10.00am to 4.00pm (all 3 days)

All materials, equipment and light lunches provided.

A maximum of four people attend this workshop, ensuring an even higher degree of individual attention.


Make your own fitting shell with Vogue 1004 (provided by us - yours to keep). Adapt and fit this basic body ‘dress’ shell to fit your own shape and learn how to transfer these alterations to any Vogue or Butterick commercial pattern.

You will go home with your own individual pattern, an individually fitted shell and instructions on transferring the alterations made to other commercial patterns.

 


LADIES’ TROUSER FITTING SHELL

Two-Day Course - £120

10.00am to 4.00pm (both days)

All materials and equipment provided

A maximum of four people attend this workshop, ensuring an even higher degree of individual attention.

Make your own trouser fitting shell with Vogue 1003. Adapt and fit this basic ‘trouser’ shell to fit your own shape and learn how to transfer these alterations to any Vogue or Butterick commercial pattern.

You will go home with your own individual shell pattern, an individually fitted shell and instructions on transferring the alterations made to commercial patterns.

 



KNICKERS’ WORKSHOP

One-Day Workshop - £80

10.00am to 4.00pm

All Equipment and Materials Provided

Maximum of Six people on this workshop

During the course of this workshop you will draft a Knicker Block and from this will cut your own individual pattern. You will use this pattern to create your own pair of knickers - from ‘harvest festivals’ to French knickers, briefs and thongs. You will learn how to use stretch stitches to sew your knickers and how to attach edge lace.

All measurements are taken fully clothed.

Once you have completed this workshop you could go on to take The Boned Bodice, Couture Techniques, Dress Fitting Shell or Trouser Fitting Shell workshops. Your tutor will advise you which workshops are best for you depending on the skills you wish to learn.

 


BONED BODICE

Two-Day Workshop - £160

10.00am to 4.00pm (both days)

All equipment and materials provided.

Maximum of Six people on this workshop

This one-day workshop will give you all the techniques you need to make a Boned Bodice.

You will make a variety of samples during the course of the day that can be used to make bodices or dress bodices.

 


ROMAN BLIND

 

One-Day Workshop - £70

10.00am to 4.00pm

A maximum of four people attend this workshop, ensuring an even higher degree of individual attention

All equipment and materials provided, but feel free to bring your own fabric.

This one day workshop will give you all the skills you need to create your own Roman Blinds.

The workshop covers, how to measure for a blind; how to calculate your fabric requirements; how to construct a blind. Workshop materials will be provided to produce your sample blind but please feel free to bring along your own fabric and window measurements so you can start work on your blind for home during the workshop.

 


SHIRT WORKSHOP

Two-Day Workshop - £150

10.00am to 4.00pm (both days)

All equipment and materials provided.

Call it a shirt or blouse, no wardrobe is complete without a classic white one. On this workshop you will make a shirt to fit you. After adjusting the pattern, you will make a classic white shirt/blouse. Learn how to turn a shirt collar, insert a sleeve placket and attach cuffs.

COUTURE TECHNIQUES

One-Day Workshop - £80

This workshop is aimed at the confident sewer who wishes to enhance their sewing skills. Learn techniques such as the ‘Hong Kong’ finish, French seams, Hand-finished Zips amongst others. You will take home a folder of instructions and the samples you have made during the day.

York School of Sewing has a range of Children’s and Young People’s courses. Aimed at various age ranges, our half-day and full-day courses run during school holidays and some weekends, with fun being a priority.
