Everything is included on our fabulous, two-day Skirt Block Workshop - an excellent introduction to pattern drafting.

Using your body measurements, we will draft a personal basic Skirt Block. Applying your new personal block, we will construct a Calico Toile, making any small adjustments that may be necessary to create your perfect fit.

With your new block, we will examine how to make style details to create your own individual patterns.

A maximum of four people attend - ensuring a high degree of personal attention.

Perfect for the younger, absolute beginner, this workshop is a great introduction to the Sewing Machine.

During the workshop, you will make a Patchwork Mat for your room or as a gift. Practicing Straight Stitch, Zig-Zag Stitch and some Fancy Stitches, by the end of the session, you will feel confident and understand how to control a Sewing Machine.


This workshop is suitable for children aged 8 to 12 years and is part of our Developing Skills in Sewing Programme for Children and Young People.

 

Your tutor for this workshop is Heather Chalkley. Heather has been helping to run the Childrens’ Workshops at The Festival of Quilts since it began in 2003.

As a member of the Quilters’ guild of the British Isles she held the post of Young Quilters’ Officer for Scotland. Formerly a Sick Childrens’ Nurse, Heather has been sewing for most of her life.

Child Age and Insurance Compliance

All participants of our Children’s Workshops MUST be a minimum of Eight Years of age on the date of the workshop, Parents/Guardians will be asked to provide a signature to confirm this.

This is very important and is to comply with our insurance terms. It is therefore a legal requirement. Any child who does not meet this condition will not be able to participate in the workshop. To avoid disappointment, please make sure you satisfy this term.

The Ogden Cami is a simple and versatile blouse that can either be worn on its own or as a layering piece under blazers and cardigans. What do I need to bring?;

  • A pair of Circular or Double Pointed Knitting Needles;
    If you choose the Cowl Project; 5mm Circular or Long Double-Pointed needles and if you choose the Scarf Project you will need; 4mm Circular or Long, Double-Pointed Needles

  • Packed Lunch

Brioche knitting in two colours creates an amazing, reversible fabric which is absolutely ideal for Scarves, Cowls, Shawls etc. By creating movement in the lines of the Brioche Rib, we reveal fascinating patterns and designs which are incredibly satisfying.

You will need to be an adventurous knitter to tackle this technique, but it is well worth the effort when you see the results which can be achieved.

You will learn the skills needed to get you started with two-colour Brioche Knitting and practise increasing and decreasing stitches to produce an elegant wave and designs which will be a real wow factor in your finished piece. The workshop will also cover Italian Cast On and Cast Off which are useful tools for this form of knitting.

Choose a kit (provided) to create your own gorgeous Brioche Scarf or Cowl.

Judith is a designer, maker with a passion for all types of needlecraft - especially knitting.

With Judith, you are in perfect hands to learn all aspects of knitting.

 A Materials List will be sent to you upon booking.
 
This workshop will introduce you to the gentle art of Machine Patchwork and Quilting. Using your own fabric, you will make your finished 9 patch block into a gorgeous Cushion.
 
Starting at the very beginning, you will use your selection of fabrics (Fat Quarters) and then learn how to Rotary Cut, piece and assemble your Quilt Block. You will go on to learn other techniques such as Quilting, Log Cabin and ‘Quilt As You Go’.
 
At the end of the course you will go home with the Cushion you have made, Samples of the Techniques you have learned and an Instruction Booklet. 

Please note: Depending on your past level of experience and progression during the workshop, you may have to finish your cushion at home

This workshop will build on the skills you already have acquired in Beginners’ Sewing Techniques - Day 1. You will learn further essential sewing techniques such as;

  • Invisible Zips - perfect for that professional finish
  • Run and Fell Seams - excellent robust and decorative seam for all kinds of projects
  • Piping - adds a great finish to any project. Make a small piped
  • Pincushion (practical and demonstrates regular cushion skills)

You will go home with an instruction booklet and folder of the samples you have made during the course of the workshop.
